Before uploading
Read the provider's current privacy terms and product controls. Check:
- who operates the service and which processors handle the file;
- whether content may be used to train or improve models;
- retention and deletion rules;
- account, sharing, and access settings;
- supported file types and size limits; and
- whether confidential, personal, regulated, or privileged material is permitted.
Avoid assuming that “not sold” means “not shared with service providers,” or that deletion from the interface means immediate deletion from every system.
Test the review itself
- Confirm the document is complete and readable.
- Check whether the report identifies the correct parties, dates, defined terms, and governing documents.
- Verify each material finding against the quoted clause or page.
- Look for missing exhibits, referenced policies, amendments, and signature pages.
- Ask the same question twice and investigate material inconsistency.
- Treat legal conclusions and proposed language as questions for qualified counsel.
Common failure modes
A review may summarize a clause accurately while missing an exception elsewhere. It may treat a heading as operative text, read a scan incorrectly, apply a general rule to the wrong jurisdiction, or supply a confident answer when the document lacks the required fact.
Those risks exist in paid products too. Do not assume a free and paid tier use the same model, prompts, context limits, output, or support unless the provider says so in current documentation.
When a free first pass is useful
It can help create an issue list, explain unfamiliar wording, and prepare a more focused conversation. Escalate when the agreement affects a business acquisition, franchise purchase, commercial tenancy, ownership, major IP, restrictive covenants, a personal guarantee, a dispute, or another material exposure.

Use a test designed to fail
Upload a document you are permitted to use and seed a checklist before the review: a defined term, a cross-reference, an amendment, a missing exhibit, an exception, and one harmless clause. After the run, check whether quotes and pages are accurate, whether the missing exhibit is labeled, and whether the tool distinguishes uncertainty from a legal conclusion. A free report that produces many warnings but loses the source is harder to trust than a shorter traceable report.
Test privacy separately. Read the current terms and privacy notice for file retention, extracted text, generated output, subprocessors, training, account deletion, and operational logs. “Free” does not answer those questions, and a no-training statement does not itself mean no storage or no human access.
Decide what the free pass can support
A free first pass can help inventory dates, clauses, definitions, and questions. It should not be the final authority for a personal guarantee, major lease, acquisition, core IP transfer, regulated data obligation, or active dispute. Preserve the report with the document version, verify each material finding, and take the focused issue list to counsel when consequence or uncertainty is high. Compare free and paid output without assumptions
Some providers use a limited report, model, page cap, export, or retention rule for free access; others use the same workflow with a usage limit. Verify the current plan terms and run the same seeded checks where permitted. Do not infer that a free result is intentionally weaker or that a paid result is automatically more accurate.
Keep a short test record: file version, upload date, pages received, warnings, seeded issues found, false positives, citations checked, export available, and deletion action. If the provider changes its plan later, this record shows what was actually tested. Avoid uploading client secrets, personal data, regulated data, or privileged material until authority and provider terms are clear.
